Are Green Tea Supplements the Answer to Your Weight Problem?

Buying green tea supplements is not the best value you can get for your money. A green tea supplement might provide some benefit, but if you’re like me, you want more.

With all of the research that has been conducted over the years, we know that long-term, low-level nutritional deficiencies cause age-related diseases, such as cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. One of the claims made by manufacturers of single-ingredient green tea supplements is that they will help you lose weight.

There are growing numbers of healthcare professionals who believe the cause of the obesity epidemic is a chronic lack of the nutrients that are necessary to support all life. In this stress-filled society that we live in, we are constantly tempted by fast, processed foods. We have to hurry to eat, so we can get back to work.

We have traffic to contend with, so we hit a drive thru and eat breakfast in the car, if we have time to eat anything at all. We are tempted by advertisements for a green tea supplement or other weight-loss aid because no matter what we do, we just can’t seem to get rid of that spare tire.

For many years, health experts blamed the obesity epidemic on our sedentary lifestyles, but a recently published study concluded that exercise was not the major factor. The study compared a group of Nigerian women who lived in Chicago and another that lived in Nigeria. The women in Nigeria did not have weight problems, but they did not exercise more than the women in Chicago. They didn’t take a green tea supplement either.

What they did do was eat more fresh foods, which provide more nutrients than processed choices. They also consumed less dietary fat and fewer calories. Although no specifics concerning their dietary regimen were published, I would be willing to bet that they consumed more complete proteins as well.

What I’m trying to say is that green tea supplements alone are not the answer to your weight problem, if that is why you are considering them. I understand that you are busy, but you can try to eat more fresh foods and consume more complete proteins, like boiled eggs, for example.

If you are considering a green tea supplement for other reasons, such as its anti-inflammatory activity, you have better options. There is no doubt that green tea supplements are good for your health, as long as the manufacturer does not add caffeine. However, there are many other natural anti-inflammatories.

If you are considering a green tea supplement because of its antioxidant activity, there are many other antioxidants in the plant world. The best value for your money is a dietary-supplement that contains a variety of different nutrients–all of those we need every day as well as a good measure of green tea extract.
